Olfactory Design Marketing Campaign

Smell is often overlooked in design due to its formless and intangible nature. Yet it works in a conscious or subliminal way that creates a lasting impression on us. Smells also trigger certain memories associated with it.
As part of a second year project at Singapore Polytechnic, we were tasked to design a scent diffuser to be placed outside, in lieu of an official opening of a Spa. The scent should function as a teaser for passer-bys to experience what is to come.
Experimenting with the Spa's signature scent, Lemongrass.

Inspired by the Art of Scent Exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design in New York, the first major museum exhibition to celebrate scent as a true artistic medium rather than a consumer product, The Scent Diffuser was created as a protrusion rather than a depression in order to dispel the scent over a wider radius. Due to its obtrusiveness and grotesque appearance, it piques the curiosity of passer-bys interact with The Scent Diffuser and enticing them to touch it. As the form of The Scent Diffuser is manipulated, the scent (Lemograss in this case) would be emitted.
